Topic: Let’s explore wild and free living horses. We will visit different NGO and non NGO projects with free living Konik, Przewalski, Exmoor and Tarpan horses. The horses live free and (semi) wild on vast areas without fences and in different natural habitats. It is a perfect opportunity to observe and document equine behaviour and how the herds live in summer. We will have 6 appointments in 3 days and try to spend half a day in each project.

Photo equipment: The horses live in wide areas and in many projects we can observe more wildlife. I recommend lenses with 200mm or even up to 400mm. It also can happen that the herds are curious and close, so a flexible zoom would be a good choice to take portraits.

Outfit and tack: It is summer and we will spend much time outdoor. So prepare for hot weather and strong sun, but maybe rain. Important is to bring good shoes because we will hike to each herd and some live in damp marshlands and the roads are often sandy. I recommend bringing a hat and sunscreen to protect from the sun.

Fitness: Tours including hiking require a basic level of fitness or at least you should be determined to reach the destination (at your pace 😉 ). I’m also a slow hiker compared to the mountain folk, but I have a strong will to grow beyond my limits. (the photos will be worth it and after a few days you will forget the pain).

Weather: we will take pictures in any weather, except in thunder storms. Weather in the mountains can be extreme and slightly unpredictable, but safety is more important than being struck by lightning for a horse photo. Worst case, the sessions on a mountain or exposed area must be cancelled.

Social: The Explorer Tour is very intense and we will spend much time together. For this reason I reserve the right to pick the best candidate for a tour, to ensure we will get along well. My two dogs travel with us and it is important that you are not afraid nor allergic of dogs.

Your Equine Photography Adventure starts here

Join me on one of my scouting tours and discover new horses and new locations with me. During my micro photo tours I’m on the constant search for new exciting models and breathtaking backgrounds. therefore I’m travelling for a weekend or a few days in Germany or in the neighbour countries and schedule photo sessions: from the vast beaches of the North Sea to the panoramic summits of the Alps, in forests and fields, in castles and barns.

Each Explorer Tour is unique! And each tour is a micro adventure. Discover rare equine breeds, free horses, golden Haflingers and other horse beauties with me.

  • Weekend or extended weekend tour
  • Around 2-4 photo sessions a day
  • Personal coaching in your field of interest (optional)
  • Only one (or max. 2) spots available

Exciting and intense

The explorer tour is no wellness holiday 😉 depending on the distances I will organise 2 to 4 photo sessions a day. This can be exhausting and we will also spend a lot of time on the road. We will meet horses who have never had a shooting before and are unknown to the community. At the same time I also enjoy meeting experienced horse models which are a dream to work with. Each Explorer Tour is unique, individual and a small adventure.

Perform photography on a new level

How to handle unexperienced horses? How to check out the location and search for the best spots? How to instruct the owner and helpers for the best poses? How to work flexible and spontaneous in a short amount of time? How to tickle the best out of a situation? How to process the photos a whole session in Adobe Bridge and Lightroom? How to tackle hard-to-edit pictures in Photoshop? How to manage and secure all the data?

I can teach you in a broad field of techniques and efficient workflows or guide you through your photographic problems.

No teacher-student situation wanted? Don't worry, we can also meet at eye level and inspire each other by sharing our photographic secrets and enjoy the tour.

Upcoming Explorer Tours

Have a look at my plans and don't hesitate to contact and book. I usually have only one spot available!

  • Fotografieren mit Aussicht. ⁣

Genießt euer Wochenende.♥⁣

  • Waving manes, muscles under tension, flying hoofs and very intimidating horse bites — that's what happens when two adult stallions come together. On this picture is Belando (behind) and Narkas, who grew up together and got never separated. After the season they are allowed to be together again, which I personally find great and from a photographic point of view it's 🔥🔥🔥 In the first minutes when they get out it's quite a show, before they go over to their business as usual (eating and hanging around just as every other horse). #thepixelnomad #vordielinse #explore_goldenhorses @haflingerforum #haflingerforum #haflingeroftheday #haflingerlove #goldenhorse #heartofgold #equinephotography #yourshotphotographer #equineexplorers @equine.explorers #explore_hairyhorses #stallion#haflingerhengst #fightingstallions #etalon #stallone #europaspferde #explorer_tour #equestrianstyle #pferdefotografie
  • 'To infinity ... and beyond!' I couldn't stay away from these photos and edited quickly another photo from South Tyrol. Not the typical pasture photo but I still like it .

  • Haflinger in the clouds! 😍 This weekend I was off in the mountains again. I wanted to use the good weather and most of the horses are in the higher pastures now, which offers a unique photo location. I went a second time to the Arztal Alm in Tyrol, where I already have been 3 weeks ago. And of course I had company, because it is so much nicer to hike (and suffer) together, chat about photography and seek for the best light and angles when finding the horses. This time @equinebywengdahl from Sweden did the pleasure of staying with me, so you can have a double amount of nice photos of this weekend. Give her page a follow 👍🏽 We parked the car of 1330 m and hiked up to the Alm cabin on 1900 m 🥵 After a short break we continued to search for the horses, which lead us up to 2200 m. We were blessed with amazing evening light after this long and hard hike! On the next day we continued our hike and went up to 2400 m, where you still have patches of snow, you have water sources coming out of the mountain and where the marmots whistle. And this is where I took this picture of this Haflinger Mare and the tyrollean glacier in the panorama. It was unreal!
In most of my Explorer Tours we are rushing from one appointment to the other. This time, we let the nature sink in and enjoyed one location to the maximum. We took beautiful pictures of the Haflingers, Norikers and mules in their summer freedom, which was our goal. In my experience, those locations who are harder to reach also have the most beautiful nature and locations. They are literally breathtaking and mind-blowing. But you need time to get there ⛰ 👉🏽 Do you fancy some Exploring, adventures and horse photography? I realised new Explorer Tour dates for August/September, join me if you like! https://thepixelnomad.com/explore/explorer-tour/ or use the link in my bio
  • I'm off exploring again! But this time it's just a Mini Explorer Tour in Austria. As a matter of fact, I'm revisiting a place were I have been two weeks ago with @laujuma.photography during our Explorer Tour. These tours usually are packed with sessions and have a tight schedule, therefore are very exhausting. This weekend however, will be more of a relaxing kind and I want to spend more time on one place, to let the location sink in and to be able to visit the horses at different times of the day and light conditions. ⁣
Which this pictures I share another Noriker photo, it fits in my little draft horse week and it was also shot on the Arztaler Alm, where I will go now (and I can highly recommend it to anybody to go there!). But by now, the horses went up higher into the mountains you can see in the backdrop of the photo. I'm super curious about the location!⁣
👉 By the way! Did you fall in love with Noriker horses by now? I'm planning to visit a Noriker Alm in Salzburg/Austria next week. If you are interested in exploring, join me on my tour!⁣

  • To appreciate heavy horses, I will continue to post photos of draft horses this week 😍 ⁣
Say hello to Sambuco, the most wonderful and powerful stallion of the breed called Süddeutsches Kaltblut (Southern German Coldblood). You can find these horses mostly around Bavaria and the most common colour is chestnut with light hair, just like Sambuco. Of all German draft horse breeds, the Süddeutsches Kaltblut has the strongest and healthiest population by now, which can be owed to the dedication of many Bavarian breeders and a good marketing and structure of the association. I hope other draft horse breeds will get to this level one day! Nevertheless, the population may be secured, the breed itself stays on the watchlist of endangered horse breeds.⁣
If you scroll down in my timeline a bit, you can find more pictures of the breed I took during stallion presentations. Enjoy!⁣
👉 Who of owns a Süddeutsches Kaltblut? Or do you know good Instagram accounts? Please link them in the comments! I'm curious about the breed!⁣

Each Explorer Tour is highly individual and I don't intend to repeat identical tours. Compared to a planned and scheduled Photo Expedition, we will be confronted with the unexpected and some Explorer Tours can be surprising. This is why the Explorer Tours have reasonable prices and are mainly calculated to cover the costs. Please contact me for price and detail of a tour.

Application. Explorer Tours are very intense and we will spend much time together. For this reason I reserve the right to pick the best candidate for a tour, to ensure we will get along well.

Dates. Most tours are published on short notice because they are dependent on weather conditions and on my schedule. I generally don’t publish any schedules because details are subjects to change until the travel date. You may always contact me for my unpublished travel plans.

Fitness. Tours including hiking require a basic level of fitness or at least a determination to grow beyond your limits.

Private Usage. All Photos can be used for your portfolio, your website, social media accounts and your private usage. For the owners and models you need to send 3 edited photos per session not later than 6 months after our tour.

Commercial Usage. Commercial use is possible, if you send 10 photos per session not later than 3 months after our tour.

Experience. You should have a basic experience in photography and know your camera. Coaching is an optional offer for specific horse photography related topics, but not to teach you the basics of photography.

If you are looking for a truely unique and exiting adventure - you should join Cecile on her Explorer Tours! It was a really fun and educational experience to go along as she meets new people, communicates her project and explores unknown locations and models. She gives great insights into the way she works and how to approach a project - a practical experience that normal workshops can barely provide. You can never know for sure how such a tour will turn out, but it will be remarkable any way.

Adventurous, exhausting and awesome. This is probably the best way to describe the Alm-weekend. If you are looking for locations that you can't reach by car, but only by foot, a tour with Cécile during the Almsummer is the right choice. In addition to unique horses and locations, you will also get an insight into her way of working with horses and an honest exchange (if you like). For me it was a very successful weekend with many special impressions, a lot of kisses from the two four-legged family members of Cécile and lots of new pictures on the hard drive. It won't be the last time 🙂
