Topic: In June and July the “Almsommer” starts in the higher pastures of the alps. I will travel several weekends and will visit different alps in South Tyrol and Tyrol. The travel dates depend on the weather conditions. Pack your hiking boots and be prepared to hike up some pastures. Usually we will spend half a day on one pasture and so we will have 2 appointments a day. I will make sure we can have at least one early morning and one late night shoot so we can capture the best light. In between we will visit different breeders and will get the chance to take more pictures there.

Photo equipment: Each high pasture is a little different and with your standard 70-200mm lens you can’t do nothing wrong. I however do recommend also at least one wide-angle lens with e.g. 35mm or 24mm or even less, so you can capture the wonderful panorama of the mountains. I have good experiences with my 24-105mm lens for such trips. Don’t forget a lot of free space on your flash cards, you will take hundreds and thousands of pictures on one weekend.

Outfit and tack: It can be very hot depending how high we will go up in the mountains and it is very common to have fast weather. In the shade, mornings or evenings it can be very chilly, even if it is a hot summer day. Mist or rain can come up very fast and unexpected. So please pack also jackets and maybe a scarf. We will hike up a lot, so proper hiking boots are a must, to protect your feet and give you enough grip. Get a good backpack for your camera, water and snacks, which is comfortable to wear and maybe hiking sticks. And don’t forget sunscreen and a hat, we will be closer to the sun 🙂

WHAT TO EXPECT

Exciting and intense

The explorer tour is no wellness holiday 😉 depending on the distances I will organise 2 to 4 photo sessions a day. This can be exhausting and we will also spend a lot of time on the road. We will meet horses who have never had a shooting before and are unknown to the community. At the same time I also enjoy meeting experienced horse models which are a dream to work with. Each Explorer Tour is unique, individual and a small adventure.

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN

Perform photography on a new level

How to handle unexperienced horses? How to check out the location and search for the best spots? How to instruct the owner and helpers for the best poses? How to work flexible and spontaneous in a short amount of time? How to tickle the best out of a situation? How to process the photos a whole session in Adobe Bridge and Lightroom? How to tackle hard-to-edit pictures in Photoshop? How to manage and secure all the data?

I can teach you in a broad field of techniques and efficient workflows or guide you through your photographic problems.

No teacher-student situation wanted? Don't worry, we can also meet at eye level and inspire each other by sharing our photographic secrets and enjoy the tour.

JOIN ME ON MY NEXT TOUR

Upcoming Explorer Tours

Have a look at my plans and don't hesitate to contact and book. I usually have only one spot available!

  • All you need is L O V E ❤️
This photo session of Karl and Libelle was probably the most challenging Explorer Tour in many levels, but despite all I have amazing photos of this photo shooting an the others. Bringing a draft horse and a farmer in Lederhosen into a south tyrollean mountain lake was definitely one of my highlights this year and confirms me in my work. I had a picture in mind and then I talked everybody into it 😅 it is so important to have a clear and good communication with your photo subjects and that you can describe your ideas and intentions. Good vibes are visible on photos 😎
So have a good start into the new week!

  • Currently I’m editing all the photo sessions I haven’t finished yet, so I can archive them before my next trip. There are still plenty gems and favorits which I haven’t shown yet, like of this photo of the Haflinger stallions Narkas and Belando during their power play. What a joy it was to photograph them 🥰 during the Explorer tour in July with my dear @laujuma.photography 👉🏽 do you also have some To Dos before Christmas and the end of the year?

  • Have you ever heard of the Hucul? In German it's called Huzule, or Carpathian Mountain Pony. There are probably more names, because the origin of the Hucul isn't one single country, but the mountain ranges in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukrainia, Romania and they are also bred in Austria and Czech Republic. The Hucul is basically THE mountain pony of Eastern Europe, just like the Haflinger is the mountain horse of the Alps and the Bosnian mountain horse of the Balkan. What makes the Hucul so special is its direct decendance of the forest and mountain tarpan, the original wild horse which populated eastern europe and got extinct. This classifies the Hucul as primitve horse, as strong, hardy, very clever pony. Back in the days people were very poor and couldn't afford to feed their horses, that's why they kept the ponies free roaming in the mountain forests, so they had to search for their own food, defend and fight wolfs and survive harsh winters. This makes the Hucul a true born survivor. And I can tell you: each pony I have met, no matter if they were semi-wild or lived in the National studs, all Huculs are clever, naughty little rascals! 😝
Unfortunately the Hucul got almost extinct after the Second World War and although they are slowly recovering, the breed is endangered. The work of national studs keeps the lines alive and some private breeders who value the qualities of the breed. Here are a few impressions I took during my Explorer Tour in Hungary. The Aggtelek National Park is home to about 200 horses and keeps them semi-wild on large areas. There is one herd with mares and one herd for stallions, were the oldest stallion is 26 years old! We were welcomed by the stud manager and spent the days with the ponies, which leads to an immense mountain of photos 🤣
Have you ever experienced Hucul horses? Tell me in the comments! 😎
  • White Beauty

"Have you ever heard of the Muraközi horse? Also called Murinsulaner in German or Međimurje in Slovenia and Croatia. It is a very old draft horse breed of the valley of the river Mur, rising in the eastern alps of Austria and flows through Sloveni, Croatia and Hungary. As a matter of fact, the FAO lists this breed as extinct in Slovenia, they don't even appear on the lists of Hungary and Austria anymore. Only in Croatia are less than 50 horses left in the database! During my research for this breed I found hungarian articles recommending farmers to add horses to the pastures used for cattle, to help the Muraközi horse to survive. After hours of writing emails and translating agricultural articles with google translate I was able to track down a breeder, but I couldn't get in touch with him. Sadly I started my Explorer Tour towards Hungary without any appointment for this horse. But at our first location for Hucul horses in the Aggektelek national park we got a big surprise! In the semi wild living Hucul herd with the stallions we spotted an oddly big Pony which didn't really fit it. The stud owner told us, this is a cold blood and when I asked him after the Muraközi horses he said yes and later showed us, that he had a few other horses in the barn! I was so happy and blessed, and although language barrier (I didn't speak any language he knows and vice versa, we had conversations with hand and feet and google translate) we managed a photo session with his horses.
So I may present: Murinsulaner stallion Zsivany! One of the gems during my tour! As you can see, they are light and small draft horses, come mostly in black and have very nice movements. Do you know any of the breed or have you been in touch with? I would love to hear about it!"

⁣#laujumaphotography #explorer_tour #berge #mountain #mountainview #haflinger #haflingersofinstagram #equinephotography #horsephotography #bestofequines #mountainhigh #europaspferde #pferdeschoenheiten #equinephotolove ⁣#paard #herde #horsephotog #teamcanon #caballo #horsephotographer #mountainlove #visittirol #wandern #hiking #cheval #österreich #wilderness #almsommer #foal
  • 5 year old Napolitano stallion "Napolitaine V", photographed during our Explorer Tour to southern Italy's Forgotten Horses. What do you think of this horse??
The Napolitano breed got recognised in the Italian registry in 2006, after they were listed as extinct since 1950. There are only few photos of these horses, but @equestrianwriter managed to organise this photo session and despite rain and storms we finally were able to take pictures by the barn :) #thepixelnomad #vordielinse #equineexplorers #explore_forgottenhorses #rareequinebreeds #rareequines #rarehorses #forgottenhorses #culturalheritage #equinephotography #pferdefotografie #horsephotography #yourshotphotographer #gonative #equineexplorers @equine.explorers #raw_horses #napoletano #cavallonapoletano #neapolitaner #neapolitanerpferd #napolitanhorse #stallone #cavallo #hengst #europaspferde #bestofequines #explorer_tour

BASIC CONDITIONS

Each Explorer Tour is highly individual and I don't intend to repeat identical tours. Compared to a planned and scheduled Photo Expedition, we will be confronted with the unexpected and some Explorer Tours can be surprising. This is why the Explorer Tours have reasonable prices and are mainly calculated to cover the costs. Please contact me for price and detail of a tour.

Application. Explorer Tours are very intense and we will spend much time together. For this reason I reserve the right to pick the best candidate for a tour, to ensure we will get along well.

Dates. Most tours are published on short notice because they are dependent on weather conditions and on my schedule. I generally don’t publish any schedules because details are subjects to change until the travel date. You may always contact me for my unpublished travel plans.

Dogs. My two dogs travel with us and it is important that you are not afraid nor allergic of dogs.

Fitness. Tours including hiking require a basic level of fitness or at least a determination to grow beyond your limits.

Private Usage. All Photos can be used for your portfolio, your website, social media accounts and your private usage. For the owners and models you need to send 3 edited photos per session not later than 6 months after our tour.

Commercial Usage. Commercial use is possible, if you send 10 photos per session not later than 3 months after our tour, or at least before the intended commercial usage.

Locations. You may publish the locations of our sessions on your social media channels with the location tag or with a hashtag. But never forward the details of the tour, the exact locations, contacts to owners or schedule to anybody else, also if you are asked about. Everybody should do their own research.

Publishing. Please use the hashtag #explorer_tour and „Picture made during the Explorer Tour with @thepixelnomad“ (or something similar) when publishing the photos.

Experience. You should have a basic experience in photography and know your camera. Coaching is an optional offer for specific horse photography related topics, but the Explorer Tour is no ideal condition to teach you the basics of photography.

Idea. The Explorer Tour is mostly a scouting tour or connected to my free projects. The  concept of the tour is to share the experiences and locations with other photographers, connect and inspire and to cover the costs of such a trip.
