Black Forest Winter Magic

In the most magnificent winter day I had a wonderful time with Black Forest draft horses in the snowy Black Forest.

Winter wonder land and Black Forest horses

Fresh powder snow and sunlight, this was seriously the first time for me! It might sound silly, but as horse photographer you don’t always get lucky to have such perfect conditions for a photo session. Especially, since in the past years we have less snow in the winter, or sometimes even too much so horses can’t move anymore. For once I was at the right time at the right place!

Black Forest draft horses in the snow

Black Forest draft horses are one of my personal favourite breeds. I love photographing any draft horse, but the lighter draft breed Schwarzwälder always holds a special place in my heart.

For this tiny winter tour I went to meet again the Black Forest horses of the Blattert family: they are one of the few breeders who have the very rare bay and black horses within the breed. First we took pictures of the mare herd in the snow, then of the only living black Black Forest horse, the stallion Ramos.

Sleigh ride in the Black Forest

The conditions couldn’t be more perfect for a sleigh ride through the Black Forest Winter Wonder Land. If you ever visit the Black Forest, I can highly recommend the same in winter (January / February) or a drive with the carriage during the rest of the year. Contact Helmut Faller of the Black forest horse breeding association for details.

Preserve equine diversity

Forgotten Horses

Almost 60% of our equine breeds are endangered or have a vulnerable status with such small populations, that their destiny often depends on the selfless commitment of individual persons. It is my mission now to explore rare and endangered horse breeds and to raise awareness by giving them a new platform and to preserve equine diversity.
