Over 60% of horse breeds are endangered and largely unnoticed. As a photographer, my mission is to discover these rare and endangered breeds, capturing their essence to give them a new platform. This book aims to tell the story of disappearing horse breeds and help preserve the rich diversity of our equine companions.
Did you know that many historical horse breeds are now endangered and gradually are fading from public awareness? This is where Forgotten Horses comes in.
I’m thrilled to announce the publication of my first ever book! It is dedicated to my ongoing project Forgotten Horses and hold the same title. Since 2018 I am exploring rare and endangered horse breeds through my photography and have met and documented more than 90 breeds that are at risk. During my research I have uncovered more horse breeds than any published book ever mentioned and in my travels I have horses that even considered as extinct by official organisations – although they are very much alive.
Although there are so many interesting horse breeds in the world, the capacity of a book is limited, so this edition will contain 15 portraits about rare and endangered horse breeds from Europe.
Join me on a journey of discovery off the beaten track. My research reveals just how many rare and sometimes unknown horse breeds still exist – sometimes right on our doorstep. Accompany me to the hidden horses of Europe on remote islands and high mountain landscapes where free herds graze. A detour to North Africa leads us to the Berber horse, one of the oldest and most influential horse breeds in the world.
My photos and videos were taken for my project Forgotten Horses and have the goal to raise awareness to disappearing horse breeds and preserve equine diversity.
